Bringing Your Story To Life

A Video Production Primer
From Action Video Productions

No two video productions are the same. The organization is different. The products and/or services are different. The audience is different. And the program objectives are different.

However, we usually follow a similar procedure in producing each program.

To help you better understand the video production process, we offer this short overview of the step-by-step procedures for a typical video production.

FIRST, THE BLUEPRINT:

For most of our productions, our company is responsible for developing the program concept and writing the script. However, before we write your script, we need to get to know your company, products, and services inside and out. Through meetings with appropriate personnel, facility tours, and a review of pertinent company literature, we try to thoroughly understand your organization and your target audience.

We then develop a detailed program outline. From this we develop the initial rough draft of the script. Through interaction with your staff the script will proceed through various revisions until we have a final approved script. We suggest that key company personnel review the script for approach and accuracy.

Our scripts are composed in a two-column format. This way we can both better visualize what will be heard (voice-over narration, on-camera testimonials, natural sound, music) together with what will be seen by the viewer (shot details, camera action, titles, effects).

Normally this script-writing phase is completed first in the production process, since the script actually becomes the blueprint guiding all other facets of the project.

"ACTION!"

Once the script is nearly complete, we are ready to start taping (unless special situations require taping prior to this point). A detailed shotlist is compiled from the video column on the script. Then we schedule shooting times that will be most convenient with you while causing the least disruption to your staff and operation.

Our camera crew will try to get the most from every shot. Together with your staff we will preview and then replay every shot on location to make sure it is what we both want before we move on to the next scene.

PUTTING IT ALL TOGETHER:

Post-production is where it all comes together. If the script calls for voice-over narration, we'll have it narrated by professional talent. Background music is selected by you or by us from our professional music library. Then the editing begins. Narration, music, video images, titles, and any needed computer graphics and special effects are blended together to produce your new program.

Finally, it's time for the unveiling. If you like, we'll even bring along the popcorn!

Usually we've both communicated so well throughout the production process that the program is right the first time. But, if there are changes to be made, we'll make them, and then submit the revised program for your approval. Our objective is for you to be completely pleased with the final program. If you're not satisfied, we're not satisfied.

Some video production companies retain all rights to the footage and the final production even though you paid them to produce it. Not us. You paid for the program. From our way of thinking, that makes it yours.

DUPLICATION, FUTURE REVISIONS, SPRECHEN SIE DEUTSCHE?

Our duplication, labeling, and packaging rates allow us to offer you economical prices on any quantity of dupes, from one to thousands. We can also handle fulfillment for you, having individual tapes drop-shipped directly to your recipients.

Products change. Equipment and processes change. Therefore, many of our clients have needed to make either simple revisions or major overhauls to their programs. We can handle that with the same proficiency we exhibited during the initial production.

We can also have your program transferred into a different video format for playback anywhere in the world. We have even had a number of our productions narrated and titled in foreign languages to reach the global market.

CALL IN THE RESERVES:

Most of our production work is completed from start to finish entirely by our own staff and equipment. However, sometimes projects require special techniques or processes we don't normally handle in-house. In that case, we'll turn to outside experts in that particular area. We still guide and control the production for you. But this way we are able to merge our understanding of your program's objectives with the special finishing touches it requires, while still keeping the program within your budget.

SUMMARY:

Well, there you have it -- the video production story in a nutshell. As we said, every production is different. But our objective is always the same:

  • your complete satisfaction with the production, and
  • a final program that successfully meets its objectives.

We'll bend over backwards to achieve both.

Please contact us if you have any questions about how a customized video presentation can meet your needs. We'll be glad to help any way we can. No strings (or video tape) attached!
