Search Engine Promotion

(This page is being updated)

Many have asked us what are the keys to reaching the top search engine rankings. While we aren't experts by any means, we have thankfully had success in reaching the top categories with a couple of our websites.

Each search engine has different criteria they use to evaluate websites for content and relevance, and they don't disclose what that criteria is. So, there is no diffinitive answer. But we're happy to share some of the things we have done and some insights from others as we have researched this topic. We hope the following is helpful as you seek to promote our own website.

Keywords
Focus on your "key words". Key words are those words/phrases potential customers would use in search engines to find your type of business/service/product. If you have a hotel in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, your keywords might include:

hotel, Lancaster, PA, Lancaster hotel, Lancaster PA hotel, motel, pennsylvania

These key words should be mentioned repeatedly throughout your site. Include them in your page copy, your photo descriptions, your links to other pages, and your meta tags. Also, each page within your site should have its wn set of keywords, customized for the specific content of the page.

Frames

If you want to rank your web pages in search engines, don't use frames in your web design. Or, at least don't use frames in the pages you want the search engines to rank. Apparently they ignore frames and therefore, any pages with frames won't be indexed.

Web Traffic -
- Some people find your website by mistake, and won't stay long. State clearly & conscisely who you are and what product/service you offer so if they need that product/service down the road they'll think of you.
- People with desire to fill, but may not be ready for a solution yet - Clarify that your product/service can address their need effectively.
- People with a desire to fill, and are looking for solutions now. Clarify that your product/service can address their need and how it is better than other options.
- People with a desire to fill and are ready to buy now. Don't let the leave your site without buying. Make it as easy as possible for them to buy as quickly as possible.

Analyze your Website Goals -
We all want more site traffic. Or do we? Think about that. Do you just want more people to visit your website, or do you want more "qualified" people to visit your website - people who are in the market for your product/service, who really are potential customers, or who are your current customers now.
